National Day of Racial Healing

What is the National Day of Racial Healing?

The National Day of Racial Healing is a time for contemplating our shared values and engaging together on #HowWeHeal from the effects of racism. Launched on Jan. 17, 2017, it is an opportunity to bring ALL people together in their common humanity and inspire collective action to create a more equitable world.

This annual observance is hosted by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF), and was created with and builds on the work and learnings of the Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) community partners. Fundamental to this day is a clear understanding that racial healing is at the core of racial equity. This day is observed every year on the Tuesday following Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

The National Day of Racial Healing is a call to action for racial healing for all people. On this day, individuals in organizations and communities come together in a shared commitment to building relationships. It’s a day for authentic dialogue and truth-telling, so we can start to see and hear each other. A day to share our stories, recognize our shared humanity, develop a sense of collective purpose and transform the world around us.

How you can take part

Participate in a Racial Healing Circle

TRHT Healing Circles bring together residents of the towns to tell our stories and bring awareness of our shared humanity.

This is a process developed by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and supported by Rutgers-Newark and offered by Social Justice Matters in cooperation with Scotch Plains/Fanwood's Joint Committee for Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation (TRHT).

Circles are confidential, safe spaces for participants to hold truthful conversations around shared experiences.

The experience relies on intentional listening and opening your heart space to unearth truths and conscious and unconscious biases. Participating in racial healing circles can also raise our awareness, consciousness, compassion, and empathy.

Tuesday, January 18 from 6:30-8:30 pm

A reminder that an in-person Racial Healing Circle will be offered on MLK Day of Service (1/17) at the JCC by Scotch Plains/Fanwood's Joint Committee for Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation (TRHT). Read more about Healing Circles and register for an MLK Day Circle here
